NZ U18 MEN TAKE OUT IHF TROPHY IN NEW CALEDONIA

New Zealand U18 came through undefeated at the recent tournament in New Caledonia with strong showing in all games.  Congratulations to the team and officials.  The team also took out the fairplay award.

Coach, Tim Rayner, said, "Particular highlight for me was to see a very professional young group from throughout New Zealand come together with one common goal of taking out the tournament. Handball is a young sport in New Zealand, so it is great that New Zealand is able to compete with countries such as the host nation New Caledonia where they grow up playing Handball in schools and where their technical abilities are so evident. It really does prove to me that with the success New Zealand Handball is having, New Zealand will be able to push through to new levels of handball in the future. Tournaments such as this are so critical for the development of Handball in our region."

Co-captains Paul Ireland and Danyah-Lee Skelton ChongNee, said the tournament was an amazing experience.  Paul said, “People generally don’t know what handball is in New Zealand, but now it means that people are really going to see handball for what it is and more people will realize what a unique sport it is. This win is a really great opportunity for the further development of handball in New Zealand.”

Danyah-Lee advised, "The tournament was a great success in my eyes, being on centre court, under the lights and music much like you would see on TV with a loud crowd really made the experience feel like we were playing at high level. In particular the game against New Caledonia, which we always expected to be one of our toughest challenges, with the strong home crowd support for their boys, really made me realise how big handball is around the world and how big a stage we were on. I'm really looking forward to the next stage and I know the boys are pumped to reach new levels."

NZ's U20 team came a creditable 4th, with this section won by Australia.

URGENT APPLICATIONS SOUGHT FOR REFEREE PAIR FOR IHF TROPHY TOURNAMENT

Applications are sought for a NZ referee pair to attend the IHF Trophy tournament in New Caledonia 9-16 June 2018. We have only just been asked by IHF to supply referees, so we have little time.

APPLICATIONS ARE SOUGHT FROM NZ PASSPORT HOLDERS ONLY AND CLOSE 5PM SUNDAY 27 MAY 2018.  Send your applications to secretary@handball.org.nz

We prefer applications from a referee pair, but given the tight time constraints, we will accept applications from individual referees.  However, preference will be given to an established referee pair.

Please apply outlining your referee experience, your commitment to refereeing and explain how you intend to continue contributing to NZ Handball through refereeing in the future.  If you have questions prior to applying, please phone Lynda Hagen, NZHF Secretary-General on 027 4477072.

James Cochrane, captain of the winning men's team Wellington Region said:

“The competition provides an opportunity for players to play high-quality competition against teams from other regions. It is important to play these regions to increase skill level amongst the regions on court, but it is also important as it encourages the culture within handball in New Zealand socially, off the court, and gets the regions to work together in support of the NZHF to grow handball in New Zealand.”

Canterbury's Jaclyn Parker, captain of the winning Women's team also commented, saying:

“This tournament is a great way to develop a high-performance pathway in New Zealand. The level of competition this weekend has been outstanding and games closely fought, evidenced by the close score lines, particularly in the women's competition.”
